The Alexia Sports Grant is a student pop-up grant within The Alexia’s shared grants competition at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School. It is sponsored by the Sports Media Center at Newhouse and supports a visual storytelling project that examines an issue connected to sports.

Applicants use the common Alexia student application and indicate that they also want their proposal considered for the Sports Grant. Projects may be planned or already in progress, and recipients are expected to make meaningful progress within one year of signing the grant agreement.

Benefits & funding

  • One recipient receives a US$1,000 project grant.
  • The student application has no submission fee.
  • Submitted images may also be considered for Alexia exhibitions and publications, with the photographer contacted for approval.

Eligibility

  • Apply through the student category as a current undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Submit no more than one proposal in the grant year; the same proposal is used for the Vision Grant and any selected pop-up grants.
  • Previous Alexia grant recipients must sit out the next three grant cycles before applying again.
  • Submit an original non-fiction visual project; AI-generated imagery is not accepted.
  • The published rules state no nationality or residency restriction, although payments and tangible awards remain subject to applicable U.S. export-control and sanctions rules.
