Thanks To Scandinavia was founded in 1963 by Victor Borge and Richard Netter. The fund commemorates Scandinavian aid to Jews during World War II and supports Scandinavian and Bulgarian students and researchers in the United States.
For Danish applicants, Fulbright Denmark nominates candidates from Core Fulbright Student Grant applications. Recipients pursue full U.S. degrees in 2027/28, with master’s students preferred.
Benefits & funding
- Each scholarship is USD 20,000, paid in the United States after arrival and restricted to tuition or tuition-related costs such as books and university fees.
- The Danish allocation comprises two master’s-degree scholarships and one Victor Borge Music Scholarship.
- Funding covers one year only.
Eligibility
- Applicants must hold Danish citizenship and meet the Core Fulbright Student Grant requirements; dual Danish-U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are ineligible.
- Applicants must pursue a full degree at master’s or PhD level and gain admission through a U.S. university’s general graduate admissions process; master’s students are preferred.
- Undergraduate study, internships, summer schools, conferences, LL.M. programs, MBA programs, exchange agreements, and studies already begun in the United States are not eligible routes.
- Victor Borge Music Scholarship applicants must study in an academic field related to music.
- Residence in Denmark is preferred but is not a hard requirement for Danish citizens abroad who can demonstrate close ties to Denmark.

Application process
- 1Confirm eligibility for both the Core Fulbright Student Grant and the full-degree Thanks To Scandinavia award.
- 2Apply to a U.S. university through its general graduate admissions process and retain proof of application or admission correspondence.
- 3Submit the Core Fulbright application through the IIE portal by February 17, 2027 at 12:00 noon CET, including the commitments form, budget, two one-page essays, a two-page CV, transcripts, two recommendations, host correspondence, and passport copy; PhD and music applicants add their route-specific documents.
- 4Fulbright Denmark may invite applicants to a short online interview in week 14 and will nominate candidates for Thanks To Scandinavia consideration.
- 5Thanks To Scandinavia decisions are made in May or June, with payment issued in the United States after arrival.
