Thai Graduate Scholarship (TGS) Program — Master's Scholarship

The Thai Graduate Scholarship (TGS) Program sends Thai graduates to universities in the United States for a master’s or doctoral degree. It is run by the Thailand-U.S. Educational Foundation, known as Fulbright Thailand, which was founded in 1950 and is funded jointly by the Thai and U.S. governments.

Four grants are awarded each year. The grant period runs for up to two years, and every field of study is open except those involving clinical practice.

Grantees travel on a J-1 visa, which carries a two-year home-residency rule, and the program expects them to return and work in Thailand for at least two years.

Benefits & funding

The program states that in most cases it provides partial financial support, so grantees usually need another source for the rest of the cost.
Master’s grantees receive up to US$46,000 per year for up to two years.
Doctoral grantees receive up to US$40,000 per year for up to two years, based on the IIE recommended award rate for foreign students.
The grant is paid in tranches by IIE and must go first to tuition, books and required supplies; anything left over may go to living costs and university health insurance.
University placement support covering up to four universities for master’s applicants and five for doctoral applicants.
A TOEFL, GMAT or GRE test voucher where one is needed.
J-1 visa sponsorship, round-trip international economy airfare, and accident and sickness insurance.

Eligibility

Thai citizenship is required. People living in Thailand who hold another citizenship must apply through the Fulbright commission or U.S. embassy in their country of citizenship.
A bachelor’s degree from a Thai university is required.
Master’s applicants need a minimum GPA of 3.0; doctoral applicants need a minimum GPA of 3.5 from their master’s degree.
English scores for master’s applicants: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 120.
English scores for doctoral applicants: TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7.5, or Duolingo 140.
All fields of study are open except those involving clinical practice.
There is no age limit, and the program states no work-experience requirement.

Application process

Read the eligibility rules and the current announcement on the program page; the application period opens in January.

Prepare the documents: résumé or CV, passport, transcripts, English proficiency scores, three essays of 400 words each, a writing sample, and a portfolio where the field requires one.

Ask three referees to submit their recommendation letters online themselves.

Submit the online application before the April close.

Clear prescreening between June and early July, then attend the interview in mid-July.

Take up the award after results in August, and work with Fulbright Thailand on university placement between September and November.
