The Clinical Research Leadership (CRL) fellowship programme is run by TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, co-sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and WHO. It places researchers and clinical trial staff who work in low- and middle-income countries at a Training Partner Organization for six to twelve months, then funds up to twelve months of reintegration work back at the home institution. Training partners in the most recent call included pharmaceutical companies, product development partnerships, research institutes and universities, with placements in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Luxembourg, Senegal, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Uganda, the UK and the USA.

The partner list and the number of seats are set again for each round. TDR launched CRL in 2023 on the foundations of the Clinical Research and Development Fellowship, which trained 128 fellows from close to 40 countries from 1999 onwards.

The programme rests on four pillars: clinical research skills gained at the partner organization, leadership skills built through coaching and a leadership role at home, gender equity in participation, and stronger capacity at the home institution once the fellow returns. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations support the programme.

Watch for the next call. TDR publishes a call listing the training partner placements available in that round, and applications are accepted only while a call is open.
  2. 2
Register at the WHO survey site named in the call. Registration returns a personal link to the online application form.
  3. 3
Complete the form, naming the placement or placements applied for and the clinical research training being sought.
  4. 4
TDR’s secretariat screens each application against the eligibility criteria.
  5. 5
Eligible applications go to the participating training partners, and each partner shortlists up to five candidates for interview.
  6. 6
Interviews are held between the home institution, the candidate and the training partner, with TDR present.
  7. 7
Partners rank the candidates they interviewed, and TDR runs the final matching of candidates to partners.
