The Taiwan EUR PhD scholarship is jointly funded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and Erasmus University Rotterdam. It supports Taiwanese citizens starting a new PhD at one of the university’s schools in Rotterdam.
Applicants first apply for a PhD position at an Erasmus school, then register with the Ministry. The next Ministry application window runs from 9 to 25 November 2026, for enrolment in 2027.
Benefits & funding
- Tuition and research costs at the university’s international-student rate.
- A living allowance of €2,000 a month (€24,000 a year), tax-free but including social-insurance costs.
- Up to four years; each further year depends on an annual academic-performance review by the university.
Eligibility
- Citizens of Taiwan with household registration in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen or Matsu; foreigners studying in Taiwan cannot apply.
- No PhD already, and not currently registered as a PhD student at Erasmus or elsewhere: new PhD positions only.
- A graduate or expected graduate of a recognised higher-education institution who meets the Erasmus school’s own PhD admission rules and has applied to it by the Ministry deadline.
- Excluded: joint-degree applicants, past recipients of Ministry overseas-study awards, and holders of another Taiwan-government overseas degree award.

Application process
- 1Apply for a PhD position at the relevant Erasmus school under its admission rules; Erasmus advises doing so before the call opens.
- 2Your future supervisor, not you, requests the school’s Letter of Acceptance.
- 3Register on the Ministry portal by 25 November 2026, 12:00 Taiwan time; the last call charged NT$1,000 per school (low-income households exempt).
- 4Send any supplementary documents, such as the Letter of Acceptance, by 23 December 2026, 15:00 Taiwan time.
