The Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness, a UK registered charity, funds symposia, small conferences and workshops that take on important questions in the field. Seminars and seminar series are not funded.
Organisers based at a UK university apply to hold the meeting in the UK. The Autumn 2026 round offers up to three of these awards; a panel of three trustees decides, normally within eight weeks of the deadline.
Benefits & funding
- Up to £2,500 for a one-day meeting; up to £3,000 for two days or longer.
- Paid to the host university after the event, against a 500-word report and an itemised invoice with receipts, claimed within three months.
- The meeting must offer at least five postgraduate travel bursaries of at least £50 each.
- The Foundation must be named in all event advertising and acknowledged at the meeting and in resulting publications.
Eligibility
- Lead applicant: an academic employed at a UK university, at any career stage; at least one organiser needs a research and publication record in the sociology of health and illness.
- The meeting must be held in the UK; co-applicants may be based abroad.
- Postgraduate students may join the organising team.
- Attendance open to anyone interested (up to a set cap) and advertised, at a time and place a regional or national audience can reach.
- The host university is expected to give basic support, such as the venue.
- Foundation trustees cannot be lead applicants.
- No nationality rule is published.
