SUSTAGRI is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Cutting-Edge Technologies for Sustainable Agriculture, coordinated by the Public University of Navarre (UPNA) in Spain with the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) in Portugal and the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) in Greece. The three universities award one joint degree, and the European Union put €4.7 million behind the programme.
The degree runs four terms and 120 ECTS, taught entirely in English, with 18 compulsory courses and no electives. Term 1 in Pamplona builds the data science, remote sensing, IoT and crop-modelling foundations; term 2 in Vila Real covers precision agriculture and soil and crop variability; term 3 in Athens covers irrigation, crop water needs and agri-environmental policy; term 4 is a 30 ECTS master thesis at one consortium university or an associated partner.
The cohort is capped at 33 places. Graduates are trained to run these technologies in the field, to advise farms on smart agriculture, or to continue into research. The first cohort started on 1 September 2025 with 26 students from 17 countries.
Benefits & funding
- 20 full Erasmus Mundus Scholarships: a non-taxable stipend of €1,400 per month for the full 24 months, plus tuition fees, insurance and mandatory participation costs, and support for travel and installation.
- Those 20 are split by origin: 3 for students from EU member states and countries associated to the Erasmus Programme, 17 for students from non-associated third countries, of which 4 must come from NDICI-Global Europe countries and 1 from IPA III countries.
- 8 full fee-waivers — 5 for EU and associated countries, 3 for non-associated third countries — covering tuition, full insurance and mandatory participation costs, with no extra charge for programme activities.
- 13 SUSTAGRI Scholarships: a single payment of €1,500 toward travel and installation, for self-funded and fee-waiver students.
- Without funding, the tuition fee was €9,000 per year in 2025-2026, so €18,000 across the degree; it covers tuition, administrative charges, diploma processing and health and accident insurance.
- Health and accident insurance is covered for every student on the programme, funded or not.
- UPNA helps admitted students arrange housing before arrival, and holds an agreement that lets scholarship holders open a Spanish bank account free of charge.
Eligibility
- Open to applicants of any nationality; the origin quotas decide how the scholarships are distributed, not who may apply.
- A bachelor’s degree of at least three years of university study and at least 180 ECTS, or an equivalent qualification.
- Preferred fields are agricultural engineering, computing or telecommunication engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering or equivalent disciplines.
- Final-year bachelor students may apply, but must graduate before the programme starts.

- Anyone who has already held an EMJM or comparable Erasmus Mundus scholarship cannot receive another one.

Application process
- 1Choose the call that matches your funding situation — scholarship, fee-waiver or self-funded; the three windows are independent and you may apply to one, two or all three.
- 2Create an account on the UPNA online pre-registration system during that call’s window.
- 3Obtain the Spanish Equivalent Overall Grade for your transcript, which the registration form asks for.
- 4Upload the file set: the SUSTAGRI Student Questionnaire, identity card or passport, official bachelor’s diploma, academic transcript listing all courses and the cumulative GPA, the English certificate and a Europass CV in English.
- 5Submit the form — it cannot be edited afterwards.
- 6The Master’s Academic Committee scores the academic record, then invites the top-ranked candidates to a videoconference interview.
- 7Check the provisional admission list on the programme site; an appeal goes to sustagri.em@unavarra.es within 3 days of notification, headed “SUSTAGRI appeal”, and is answered within 7 days.
