The Student Undergraduate Research Fellowship supports University of Arkansas sophomores, juniors, and seniors doing in-depth research or creative work in any discipline, each with a faculty mentor.

The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards reviews every application on campus, then forwards approved ones to the Arkansas Division of Higher Education, which makes the awards. Funding can cover spring only, or spring plus summer and/or fall.

Benefits & funding

  • Student stipend: $1,250 for a spring-only project or $2,500 for a multi-semester project; it may be used for living costs.
  • Up to $750 for student travel to present or carry out the research.
  • Up to $750 for the mentor’s project costs, plus a $250 institutional bonus, for $1,000 in total.
  • Funding starts no earlier than January and ends at graduation; unspent funds must be returned.

Eligibility

  • University of Arkansas sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
  • U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or resident aliens; international students are not eligible for SURF (they are considered for campus research grants instead).
  • At least 30 hours of on-campus college credit by the time funding begins.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher when applying.
  • Full-time enrollment in every funded term: 12 hours in fall or spring, 6 in summer.
  • A faculty mentor, a well-developed proposal, and faculty support; no active Honors College Research Grant during the SURF.

Application process

    Register with the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards to receive the application packet.

    Prepare the proposal and budget with your faculty mentor, and arrange three faculty recommendation letters.
  3. 3
    Submit the full application, letters included, in InfoReady before your early review or SURF Collection appointment (October 14–16, 2026).
  4. 4
    After the campus review, approved applications go to the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
