The annual fellowship is awarded by FNRS and FWO with support from the King Baudouin Foundation for the SofinaBoël Fund. It funds PhD students affiliated with Belgian universities to conduct research or training at one host abroad, outside the United States.
Stays last 6 or 12 months during the 2027–2028 academic year. Applications close on 26 October 2026.
Benefits & funding
- A €1,650 monthly top-up may cover accommodation, living costs, research or training expenses, and local transport.
- A €1,000 lump sum covers one economy-class return ticket.
- Recipients must submit scientific and financial reports within three months of returning to Belgium.
Eligibility
- Be a PhD student with a fully paid Belgian-university affiliation at the deadline and departure, maintained throughout the stay.
- Have earned an MA or MSc after 1 November 2022.
- Have at least one full year of prior paid or unpaid affiliation with a Belgian university.
- Undertake one 6- or 12-month stay at one host outside the United States during academic year 2027–2028.
- Have never received this fellowship.
