Run by the Office for Open Research, this fellowship supports University of Manchester staff to address an open research skills, practice or community need. Fellows use protected time to produce reusable resources, activities or infrastructure.
Up to six fellows will work from January to October 2027. Applications are open from 7 September to 23 October 2026.
Benefits & funding
- A 0.2 FTE salary buyout provides protected time for ten months, from January to October 2027.
- Fellows can request a development fund for output quality, delivery, accessibility, reach or reuse; costs require approval.
- The Office for Open Research and relevant Library colleagues provide activity-dependent advice and guidance.
Eligibility
- Applicants must hold a University of Manchester employment contract continuing until at least 31 October 2027.
- Their post must be at Grade 7 or below.
- Approval from the relevant Head of School, Service or equivalent is required before submission.

Application process
- 1Identify the open research skills, practice or community need the fellowship activity will address.
- 2Prepare a proposal covering scope, audience, outputs, domain expertise, advocacy and any indicative development-fund costs.
- 3Obtain the required head-level approval and submit the Expression of Interest Form by 23 October 2026.
- 4Shortlisted applicants attend a panel interview; all applicants receive the outcome in December 2026.
