SÍM Residency is a self-directed artist residency run by SÍM – The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists in Reykjavík, Iceland. It gives international artists and cultural practitioners accommodation, studio access and time for artistic research, development and production.
Participants choose a stay of one, two or three months and work at a SÍM residency location in Reykjavík. The program also creates opportunities for public presentations, artist talks and engagement with Iceland’s art scene.
Benefits & funding
- The program provides accommodation, studio facilities, orientation, an introduction meeting and opportunities for public presentations and artist talks.
- Participants receive promotion through the SÍM Residency website and social channels, plus an SÍM guest artist card with museum and gallery access and art-supply discounts.
- This is self-funded: the non-refundable program fee is ISK 50,000, and standard single-room accommodation is ISK 140,000 per month.
- Food, work materials, insurance, travel, other living costs and workshop fees are not included.
Eligibility
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in fine arts or have similar qualifications.
- The program accepts visual arts media and cross-disciplinary proposals; curators and art writers may apply with research-based projects.
- No nationality, residency, age, gender or stated professional-experience restriction is published.
- Applicants must submit a project proposal and examples of previous work.

Application process

- 2Complete the online form with personal details, artistic medium and a CV covering education and recent activities.
- 3Submit a project proposal of no more than 2,300 characters and three images of previous projects, with optional website, Instagram or video links.
- 4Indicate any short-notice availability and submit the form by the published deadline.
