Harvard-Yenching Institute

Application Deadline

April 15, 2027

The Harvard-Yenching Institute subsidizes the publication of academic monographs that grew out of an author’s research stay at the Institute.

The money goes directly to a reputable academic press that has already accepted the manuscript. A limited number of grants are awarded competitively each academic year, with two application rounds.

Benefits & funding

  • A publication subsidy with no fixed amount: the press states the sum it needs and why.
  • Paid to the press, not to the author.
  • The press must credit the grant in the book’s front matter and send HYI a written narrative and financial report within two months of publication.

Eligibility

  • Former HYI Visiting Scholars, Visiting Fellows (regular fellowship or training programs), Doctoral Scholars, Coordinate Research Scholars, or Harvard-Yenching Library Research Grant recipients.
  • Back in their home country for at least two years.
  • A manuscript in the humanities or social sciences, with an emphasis on culture.
  • A significant part of its research or writing done during the HYI stay.
  • Accepted by a reputable academic press, which HYI must approve.
  • No nationality, age or degree requirement is stated.
