The SIEPR Predoctoral Research Fellows Program, run by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, hires post-baccalaureate researchers to work full-time with one or two SIEPR faculty on economic policy research projects. Fellows (“predocs”) join professional development activities and may enroll in one Stanford course of up to five units each quarter. The role is designed for people planning to pursue a PhD and careers in economics, public policy, or related fields. It is an in-person position based on the Stanford campus in California, running within the July–June program year. Fellows expand their quantitative skills, learn the research process, and see how research shapes policy.

  • One-year fixed term, eligible for one renewal in a consecutive second year based on programmatic need and funding

Eligibility

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) must be obtained before the start date; a Master’s degree is not required
  • Strong quantitative and statistics background expected; non-economics majors may apply if they have strong statistics preparation and a clear interest in economics
  • Experience with programming such as Stata, R, or Python is valued
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States is required; Stanford may sponsor a J-1 visa, or candidates may work under valid OPT or OPT STEM authorization; the position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship
  • International applicants are welcome; no GRE, GMAT, or TOEFL scores are required

    Apply through the Stanford Careers website; applications sent by email are not reviewed.

    Submit a cover letter, a CV, and undergraduate (and, if applicable, graduate) transcripts — unofficial copies are accepted.

    Optionally include one writing sample (about five pages, in English) that shows independent analytic writing.

    Shortlisted candidates are interviewed; references are requested and contacted at that stage.

    Selected fellows begin the appointment around July 1.
