The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University offers two positions each year for junior scholars studying contemporary Asia. Research may address political, economic, or social change in Northeast, Southeast, or South Asia, as well as regional international relations or international political economy.

Fellows reside at Stanford for 10 months, pursue research and writing, present findings in Center seminars, and participate in APARC’s publication program. The 2026–27 competition is closed, and APARC says it will publish information about the next cycle in fall 2026.

Benefits & funding

  • A 10-month salaried appointment based on an annual rate of $80,000, prorated for the appointment.
  • Up to $3,000 for research expenses.
  • Two fellowship positions are offered.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be recent PhDs and no more than three years past the award of their doctorate when the fellowship begins.
  • For the 2026–27 cycle, the dissertation had to be submitted and approved for conferral by June 30, 2026.
  • Certification of degree completion and conferral had to be submitted by August 31, 2026.
  • Proposed work must concern contemporary political, economic, or social change in the Asia-Pacific, or international relations or international political economy in the region.
  • Fellows must reside at Stanford and participate in Center activities throughout the academic year.
