The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest international postgraduate scholarship programme in the world, run by the Rhodes Trust at Oxford. The China constituency awards four Scholarships a year to mainland Chinese citizens for full-time postgraduate study at the University of Oxford, in almost any field the University offers. Scholars come to the UK for two or more years, and the Scholarship pays fees and a living stipend for that time. Selection for China is overseen by National Secretary Ms Alice Wang, supported by Deputy National Secretaries Dr Noa Ren and Ms Wanyu Zhang. Scholars join a worldwide community of more than 4,500 living Rhodes Scholars in over 100 countries. The round now open selects during 2026 for entry to Oxford in October 2027.

Benefits & funding

  • An annual living stipend of £20,400, about £1,700 a month, at the 2025-26 rate
  • The fee required to apply to study at the University of Oxford
  • Student visa fees and the associated UK International Health Surcharge
  • Two economy-class flights to and from the UK, at the beginning and the end of studies
  • A settling-in allowance on arrival
  • Up to three years of fees and stipend for a Scholar who takes a DPhil (PhD) at Oxford; the number of years covered for other courses follows the Conditions of Tenure

Eligibility

  • Citizen of the People’s Republic of China; the four Scholarships in this constituency are for mainland Chinese citizens
  • Age, one of two routes: aged 18 to 23 on 1 October 2026, meaning born after 1 October 2002 and before 2 October 2008; or under 27 on 1 October 2026, meaning born after 1 October 1999, and having completed a first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2025
  • Will have completed an undergraduate degree, normally a Bachelor’s, by July 2027, with an academic record that meets or exceeds the entry requirements of the chosen full-time Oxford course. A First Class Honours degree or equivalent, or a GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher, improves the chance of Oxford admission
  • English to the standard of the University of Oxford’s higher-level language requirement, or a waiver under Oxford’s criteria
  • The age limits are set by the Rhodes Trustees and are applied strictly
  • The Scholarship covers full-time courses only. PGCert and PGDip courses, including the PGCE, are not covered, nor are the DClinPsych and graduate-entry medicine. The MBA and the MFE can only be taken as a second-year course
  • A candidate with a strong connection to more than one constituency should read the Inter-Jurisdictional Consideration rules before choosing where to apply
  • The constituency publishes no residency requirement and no minimum period of study inside China

Application process

    Read the China constituency documents: Information for Candidates, the guidance for referees, the Conditions of Tenure that lists eligible courses, and the Scholars Guide for Applicants.

    Check yourself against the China eligibility criteria, and against the Inter-Jurisdictional Consideration rules if you have ties to more than one constituency.

    Consider a constituency information session; the Rhodes Trust runs webinars for candidates through the year.

    Prepare the application, including a CV on the Rhodes PDF template, and brief your referees using the China referee guidance.

    Submit through the online portal, which is open only between 1 June and 31 August 2026.

    Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a selection committee made up of Rhodes Scholars and community leaders.

    Selected Scholars then apply separately for their course through the University of Oxford graduate study website, for entry in October 2027.
