The Prix François Desiron is one of the associated-foundation prizes in the Fondation Léon Fredericq’s call in Liège. It comes from a bequest to the University of Liège for ophthalmology research.
It backs a young researcher whose specialist Master’s or doctoral work targets preventing or treating myopia; clinical, basic and applied research count equally. The rules say the prize runs every two years, and the 2026 rules were listed subject to approval by ULiège’s board.
Benefits & funding
- €15,000, not split; kept at this level as long as the endowment’s income allows.
- Pays part of research costs in ULiège departments or labs, or a travel grant for extra study on a placement abroad or at another Belgian university.
- Awarded once per person.
- Winners must attend the October ceremony, credit the funder in publications and file an activity report.
Eligibility
- Medical graduate of the University of Liège, now doing a specialist Master’s or a doctorate in the field.
- Work centred on myopia that shows a significant research advance.
- Attached to a CHU de Liège and/or ULiège department when applying and when funds are released (1 January 2027 in the last round).
- No age limit; no nationality or residence rule is stated.
- Projects needing ethics approval are funded only after a favourable opinion.
