Perimeter Scholars International is a 10-month theoretical physics master’s program at Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada. Students complete accelerated core and elective coursework plus a supervised research essay, and successful graduates earn a University of Waterloo MSc in Physics and a Perimeter certificate.

The program is designed for applicants who want broad preparation across theoretical physics before specializing. Applications are currently closed, with the next intake opening in October 2026.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should have demonstrated undergraduate-level knowledge of classical mechanics, electromagnetism, special relativity, quantum mechanics, and statistical physics.
  • A physics or related undergraduate degree is the normal route, but candidates with another degree may be considered if they can demonstrate the required physics preparation.
  • Applicants of any nationality may apply; no age, gender, residence, or work-experience requirement is stated.
  • Some admitted international students must satisfy the University of Waterloo’s English-language proficiency requirements.

Application process

    Complete the PSI application when the next cycle opens.

    Upload post-secondary transcripts, a current CV, and a statement of purpose of no more than 5,000 characters.

    Provide names and email addresses for at least three referees; an optional fourth referee may be listed.

    Add optional GRE or preliminary English-language test results if available, and provide an English translation for any transcript not issued in English.

    If shortlisted, complete a short oral interview if requested; successful applicants later provide official transcripts and any required official language results.
