The International Internship Pilot Program (IIPP) is run by Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and administered by the Science & Technology Policy Research and Information Center (STPI) under the National Institutes of Applied Research (NIAR). It places overseas university students in short research internships of 28 to 90 days with a principal investigator (PI) at a Taiwanese academic or research institution. The aim is to let international students experience Taiwan’s strengths in science and technology, build ties with local research groups, and consider Taiwan for future graduate study or a research career. Up to 600 interns are hosted per year.
Benefits & funding
- Stipend of NT$1,000 per day (roughly US$30/day), paid for the internship period, up to a maximum of 90 days per person
- First payment is issued within 30 working days after the internship begins; later monthly payments require submitted reports and attendance records
- Hands-on research training and mentorship from a Taiwanese PI
- Note: interns pay their own airfare, visa fees, accommodation, meals, insurance and any internship-related fees — these are NOT covered by the program
Eligibility
- Foreign nationals enrolled as bachelor’s, master’s or PhD students at an overseas higher-education institution, with continuous enrollment through the end of the internship
- Foreign students who have completed a Taiwan exchange program and not yet returned home may also apply
- NOT eligible: nationals of Mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau, and foreign nationals studying in those places (per Article 3 of the program guidelines); Taiwan nationals are not eligible, as this is a program for foreign nationals
- Field of study should match Taiwan’s key research-and-development areas / core strategic industries; humanities and social sciences backgrounds are also accepted
- Proficiency in English or Mandarin is required (a self-introduction video serves as proof)
- No age limit
Application process
- 1Register and submit an online application on the IIPP portal within an open application window.
- 2Upload the required documents: passport copy (or temporary ID), proof of current enrollment, a CV/résumé, one letter of recommendation from a teacher, and a self-introduction video.
- 3Pass the eligibility review, then match with a PI offering a position through the online system; the PI reviews applicants and, on mutual agreement, uploads a consent form.
- 4The IIPP Office conducts a secondary review, considering the applicant’s record and potential, home institution, language ability, and the PI’s recommendation.
- 5Receive the admission notice — matching results are announced roughly 8–10 weeks before the internship start date.
