The Nordic Scholarship Programme pays for a one-month stay at the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) in Uppsala, Sweden. NAI is a Swedish research-led public agency, jointly financed by Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and describes itself as a knowledge hub for collaborative research, library services and communication on contemporary Africa. The month is built around the Institute’s library collections on contemporary Africa — books, periodicals, newspapers and government publications — and around a link to work already under way at the Institute through an NAI research host. NAI gives the purpose as building capacity in the production of knowledge about Africa and promoting relations with and between Nordic research communities. Scholarships are awarded once per year; the published awardee lists run from 2 to 8 scholars a year between 2018 and 2025, with 7 in 2025 and 8 in 2024. Applications are closed at the moment, and the call for the 2027 programme opens in September 2026.

Benefits & funding

  • Travel: the least expensive fare from the residential address in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland to Uppsala and return.
  • Free accommodation, centrally located in Uppsala.
  • A subsistence allowance of SEK 400 per day.
  • A workspace with a desk and a computer in a shared office at the Institute for the one-month stay.
  • Free photocopying, up to a maximum of 1,000 copies.
  • Not covered: health care insurance or other insurances.

Eligibility

  • Master student, PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher in the social sciences or humanities.
  • Affiliated to a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland.
  • Pursuing Africa-oriented studies or research.
  • Open regardless of citizenship.
  • The Institute states no age limit and no minimum years of experience.

Application process

    Check the two hard conditions: a master’s, doctoral or postdoctoral position in the social sciences or humanities, and an affiliation with a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland.

    Watch the programme page from September 2026, when the call for the 2027 programme opens. Between cycles NAI publishes neither the application form, nor the list of required documents, nor a closing date.

    Prepare the case for the stay: what the month in the Institute’s Africa collections is for, and which strand of NAI’s own work the project connects to.

    A selection committee formed for the announcement assesses the applications. NAI says the committees work under rules of ethics and proficiency, weighing transparency, equity and fairness, and that members are drawn from staff with a range of backgrounds, professions and other diversity criteria.
