NHSMUN — National High School Model United Nations — is run by IMUNA, a US non-profit formally associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications. Now in its 53rd year, it calls itself the largest and most diverse Model UN conference for secondary school students, and has drawn participants from more than 130 countries over its history. The 2027 edition runs as two identical sessions in March at the New York Hilton Midtown, with opening or closing ceremonies at United Nations Headquarters when space is available. Delegates represent assigned countries in simulated UN committees, attend mission briefings and a speakers series, and take part in service-learning programming tied to the Sustainable Development Goals. Schools enter as delegations; the conference publishes no route for a student applying alone.

Benefits & funding

  • Four conference days covering committee sessions, training workshops, mission briefings, the speakers series, the delegate social, faculty sessions and the banquet, plus credentials and conference materials — all carried by the participant fee.
  • Registered delegations receive background guides, committee director letters, rules of procedure, and beginner and advanced preparation and research guides.
  • Optional practice simulations and training run the day before each session (11 and 16 March 2027) at no extra cost.
  • Opening or closing ceremonies are held at United Nations Headquarters, subject to UN space availability.
  • This is a paid conference, not a funded programme. Participant fee: US$145 early (to 31 August 2026), US$155 regular (1 September – 31 October 2026), US$185 late (from 1 November 2026). A US$95 school fee applies, plus US$95 per delegation — that is, per country or role requested.
  • Housing is extra: delegations are told to budget about US$105 per person per night at the New York Hilton Midtown. Refunds are full before 15 November 2026, 50% between 15 November 2026 and 1 January 2027, and none after that.
  • IMUNA publishes no scholarship or fee-waiver scheme for NHSMUN New York; fee questions go to nhsmun@imuna.org.

Eligibility

  • Open to secondary schools anywhere; schools from more than 70 countries take part each year and no nationality is excluded.
  • Participants must be of secondary school age — most are 13 to 18.
  • Registration is by school delegation of up to 50 students. Larger groups are considered case by case and may carry extra supervision requirements.
  • Every school outside New York City must house its delegation at the New York Hilton Midtown, and a fee is assessed on schools that cannot. Schools based in New York City may commute.
  • Seats are confirmed only once the invoice is paid in full inside the registration window.

Application process

    Pick a session — 12–15 March or 17–20 March 2027 — and settle delegation size plus country and committee preferences.

    Submit the registration request form on the NHSMUN registration page.

    Expect an automated confirmation email; the NHSMUN team reviews the request within one to two business days.

    Receive an invoice matching group size and the chosen payment method: check, credit card (3.5% processing fee, 4.5% for international cards), or wire transfer (US$20 fee).

    Pay in full before the current registration window closes — the fee tier and the seats are both fixed by the payment date, not the form date.

    From early November, book rooms in the NHSMUN block at the New York Hilton Midtown through the dedicated reservations representative.
