Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Benefits & funding

• One internship unit provides a $6,000 research award for a 12–24-week project; the official page displays the dollar sign without naming the currency.
• Two internship units provide $12,000 for one 24–48-week project or two 12–24-week projects.
• The award can support travel, accommodation, research expenses, and a stipend, and is administered through the Canadian institution as a research grant in the Canadian supervisor’s name.
• Funding is subject to availability, and Mitacs encourages applicants to seek other support to cover all expenses.

Eligibility

• The intern must remain a full-time senior undergraduate, graduate student, or postdoctoral fellow at an eligible Canadian or international institution throughout the award. Undergraduates must have completed their second year before departure.
• A postdoctoral applicant must have earned the PhD no more than five years before the proposed project start and must hold postdoctoral status at an eligible institution.
• Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
• The intern needs eligible home and host supervisors, cannot conduct the project at an institution where they previously completed a degree, and cannot conduct it in a country whose citizenship they hold.
• For travel into Canada, applicants may come from any country except Russia or North Korea. For travel from Canada, the destination cannot be under a Government of Canada advisory to avoid all travel or avoid non-essential travel; applicants must also meet destination travel and immigration requirements.
• An intern may hold no more than two Globalink Research Award or Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program units over an academic lifetime and cannot participate in another Mitacs internship at the same time.
• Mitacs publishes no separate residency or gender gate; eligibility instead depends on academic status, institutional eligibility, travel direction, destination, and citizenship relative to the host country.

Application process

   Review Mitacs and Canadian-institution rules, contact the local Mitacs Advisor to confirm that the project fits available funding, and request access to the application portal.

   Identify home and host supervisors and agree on a project; Mitacs does not match interns with supervisors.

   Have the Canadian academic supervisor obtain institutional endorsement before preparing the application.

   Complete the portal fields, research proposal, and pre-departure form; the intern and all supervisors must enter their own information, answer the research-security question, and sign off.

   Obtain the required Canadian-institution signatures, allowing one to three weeks.

   Submit the complete application 12–16 weeks before the planned start through an authorized Mitacs Advisor, Canadian supervisor, or the intern who created the application.

Program timeline

1. Ongoing

   Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, subject to institutional allocation and available funding.

2. 12–16 weeks before the planned start

   Submit the complete application.

3. Typically 10–12 weeks after submission

   Mitacs issues the outcome.

4. After approval

   Confirm project dates and complete pre-departure requirements before Mitacs issues the award letter; travel cannot begin before both letters are issued.

5. Within one year of the outcome letter

   The project must begin.

6. 12–24 weeks per unit

   Complete one unit, or complete two units as one 24–48-week project or two separate 12–24-week projects.
