REM Plus 2 is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Renewable Energy in the Marine Environment, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. Four universities teach it together: University College Cork in Ireland, the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, and either École Centrale Nantes or Politecnico di Torino for the third semester.
Students cover 120 ECTS over two years and change country each semester, finishing with a master thesis that can be written at a partner university or at one of the programme’s associate companies and research centres. Teaching is in English throughout, and the subject matter is offshore wind, wave, tidal and sea-current energy.
Applicants pick one of two specializations: Renewable Offshore Energy Systems Engineering, aimed at engineering and mathematics backgrounds, or Power Electronics and Control for Offshore Renewable Systems, aimed at electrical and control backgrounds. The consortium is currently revising its admission and selection procedure, so the steps below describe the most recent cycle until the updated version is published.
Benefits & funding
- Erasmus Mundus scholarship: participation costs paid in full, plus a monthly living allowance of €1,400 for up to 24 months, a maximum of €33,600.
- The scholarship also contributes to travel and installation costs and covers insurance; the travel contribution is paid in two halves, in September of year one and before September of year two.
- Without a scholarship, participation costs for the four semesters are €10,000 for Programme Country students and €18,000 for Partner Country students, paid yearly in advance in one instalment.
- IBERDROLA reserves two scholarships for REM students of Spanish nationality; partner universities, Spanish and Basque government bodies and the Pays de la Loire regional council list further funding routes.
Eligibility
- Open to applicants of any nationality; the first edition drew candidates from 63 countries.
- The relevant bachelor’s degree may still be unfinished when applying but must be completed before the programme’s enrolment deadline; applicants submit a certified transcript of all courses taken and a certified copy of the highest degree obtained, both in English.
- An engineering or mathematics background suits Specialization A; an electrical or control background suits Specialization B.
- English at CEFR B2 or above for non-native speakers: TOEFL iBT 90, IELTS 6.5, TOEIC 800, B2 First or an equivalent test; applicants who completed their studies in English are eligible with an official confirmation letter.
- Scholarship classification follows residence: applicants residing in an EU member state, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Türkiye or Serbia count as Programme Country candidates, all others as Partner Country candidates, provided they have not spent more than 12 months of the past five years in those countries.
