The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IREX, it brings up to 700 accomplished young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States each year for academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. Fellows spend six weeks at a U.S. college or university in one of three tracks — Business, Civic Engagement, or Public Management — followed by a concluding Summit in Washington, DC; a selected group also completes an optional Professional Development Experience with a U.S. organisation. Since 2014, nearly 7,800 fellows from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa have taken part. Note: the Fellowship will not take place in 2026, and a future (2027) cohort has not yet been confirmed.
