NucPhys is a two-year joint master’s degree in nuclear physics worth 120 ECTS, taught in English by six European universities: Seville, Barcelona and Complutense Madrid in Spain, Caen Normandy in France, and Padua and Catania in Italy.

It started in 2017-2018 as an Erasmus Mundus course of the European Union and is now in its third Erasmus Mundus project. Every student moves between countries and spends at least one semester in each participating country, with the fourth semester given to a 30 ECTS master’s thesis at a partner institution.

Students pick one of three paths: experiments at large accelerators, theoretical nuclear physics, or applications and small accelerators. Graduates receive a master degree from each consortium university plus a diploma supplement, and go on to research, medical physics, radiation safety, instrumentation and the nuclear energy sector.

Benefits & funding

  • Erasmus Mundus scholarship: 12 to 13 per edition from the 2026/2028 intake, paying €1,400 a month for the full duration of the master and covering participation fees in full.
  • INFN scholarship: one per edition from Italy’s National Institute for Nuclear Physics, €1,000 a month for 24 months, with the thesis carried out at an INFN facility.
  • Region of Normandie scholarship: up to five offered for 2026-2027, €10,000 paid as €1,000 a month over ten months.
  • One application covers admission and all three scholarships; no separate scholarship form is needed.
  • Participation fee is €9,000 a year, €18,000 in total, covering registration at the three host institutions, language courses, insurance, the joint degree and diploma supplement, and administrative costs.
  • Fee waivers for students without an Erasmus Mundus scholarship: 22 students in the 2025/2027 intake received a total waiver; others get roughly 50% off the first year and up to 85% in the second year depending on academic performance.
  • Up to €60,000 is set aside for the individual needs of students with disabilities, in unit costs from €3,000 to €60,000.
  • Required literature, accommodation, travel and fieldwork costs are not covered.

Eligibility

  • A university qualification corresponding to a bachelor in Physics under the Bologna framework, equivalent to 180 ECTS.
  • Chemistry, Engineering, Applied Mathematics and similar majors are accepted as elective candidates but ranked with lower preference; the programme is built around quantum mechanics.
  • Final-year students may apply with a university letter stating the expected graduation date; EU citizens should graduate by August of the start year, non-EU citizens by June because of visa processing.
  • Non-native English speakers must show B2 level: TOEFL 78, IELTS Academic 6.0, or Cambridge FCE at B2 with a score of 72.
  • No English test is needed from graduates of Canada, the USA, the UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or from anyone taught entirely in English who supplies a medium of instruction certificate.
  • A written commitment to full-time study for the two-year period is required.
  • A residence certificate and a work, study or training certificate must each have been issued within 12 months of the application deadline.
  • Open to applicants of any nationality; no age limit and no work experience requirement.

Application process

    Download the Word application form from the Application Procedure page and fill it in digitally.

    Print the signature page, sign it by hand, and assemble everything into a single PDF of no more than 5 MB.

    Attach a passport or ID copy, photograph, CV, bachelor certificate or expected graduation letter, academic records with the course list and grades, English proof, letter of motivation and letter of commitment.

    Ask at least two referees, one of them academic, to send signed and stamped referee forms directly from their official academic email addresses.
