John Monash Scholarship — Master's Scholarship

The John Monash Scholarship is an annual postgraduate award from the General Sir John Monash Foundation. It supports Australian citizens undertaking a full-time master’s or PhD at an accredited university outside Australia, with no restriction on field of study or overseas institution.

The award combines flexible financial support with travel assistance and access to the Foundation’s Leadership Academy. Applications for the 2027 study cohort are closed, and the next round is expected to open in May 2027 for study beginning in 2028.

Benefits & funding

AUD 100,000 per year for tuition, accommodation and other living expenses.
A one-year master’s receives AUD 100,000, a two-year master’s receives AUD 200,000, and a three-year PhD or DPhil receives AUD 300,000.
An additional one-off travel allowance helps with flights from Australia to the country of study.
Scholars receive career support and lifelong leadership development through the Leadership Academy.
Study extending beyond three funded years must be self-funded for the remaining period.

Eligibility

Applicants must be Australian citizens, including dual citizens.
Applicants must have completed, or complete by the end of 2027, an undergraduate degree at an Australian university.
Applicants must plan to begin a full-time master’s or PhD at an accredited university outside Australia in 2028.
Current postgraduate study and programs beginning in 2027 are not eligible for the next round.
Applicants planning to study at an Australian university are not eligible.
A Rhodes, Fulbright or Ramsay scholarship cannot be held for the same program.
There is no age limit, minimum grade-point average, field restriction or stated work-experience requirement.

Successful candidates receive the scholarship before applying to their preferred overseas universities.
