The Japanese Student Scholarship Program is a grant-based award from the INPEX Scholarship Foundation for long-term study, research, or fieldwork in Indonesia, Australia, or the United Arab Emirates. It supports a limited number of recipients for each destination and aims to strengthen understanding and friendly relations between Japan and the destination countries.
Applicants choose a university, research institute, or other host organization in a target country and must have a clear research subject. The award can run for up to two years.
Benefits & funding
- A monthly living allowance of JPY 150,000 during the funded period.
- One economy-class outbound and return flight during the scholarship period; recipients already abroad when selected receive only the return flight.
- A JPY 20,000 settling-in allowance at departure.
- Funding lasts no more than two years; housing is not provided, and passport, visa, taxes, and related travel costs remain the recipient’s responsibility.
Eligibility
- Hold Japanese nationality.
- Be under 35 on the application deadline.
- Have graduated from a Japanese university, or hold academic qualifications equal to or above a bachelor’s degree. A master’s or doctorate also qualifies.
- Have a clear research subject and intend to undertake long-term study, research, or fieldwork at a university, research institute, or similar organization in Indonesia, Australia, or the United Arab Emirates.
- Have been admitted to the host organization or expect to receive permission, demonstrate strong academic performance and good health, and intend to contribute to friendly relations between Japan and the destination country.
- In principle, not receive another overseas-study scholarship or grant, although the Foundation may allow compatible concurrent funding.
