The IOE – Windle Trust Scholarship is an annual award jointly offered by UCL Institute of Education and Windle Trust International. It supports one recipient to complete a master’s degree at UCL IOE in London.
Applicants enter through Windle’s Postgraduate Scholarship Programme. The 2026 recruitment round closed on 12 June 2026, and the dated Windle criteria govern that cycle.
Benefits & funding
- Full academic tuition fees are covered.
- A monthly maintenance stipend is provided for the full UK study period, normally one year.
- Overseas scholars receive return airfare; the current UK programme also identifies relocation costs.
- The programme includes leadership training, themed workshops, orientation, and welfare and pastoral support.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be refugees, internally displaced, or otherwise affected by conflict.
- Applicants must originate from East, Central or the Horn of Africa: Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
- For the dated 2026 recruitment, documented refugees could live anywhere in Kenya or Uganda; other candidates needed the specified long-term links to eligible areas in those countries.
- Applicants need a first degree equivalent to at least a UK upper second-class degree and must meet any higher UCL course requirement.
- At least two years of relevant professional or volunteer experience after the undergraduate degree is required before university placement.
- Applicants must be able to study in English; shortlisted UK candidates may need IELTS 6.5 overall with no component below 6.0, unless the university requires more.
- Scholars are expected to return to their current country within one month after study or before their study visa expires, whichever is sooner.
