The IOE – Clarke Scholarships are funded by a donation from the family of former IOE Director Sir Fred Clarke. They support practising school teachers who are South African nationals and permanently resident in South Africa to take a campus-based master’s degree at UCL’s Institute of Education in London.

The 2026 round is closed, and UCL says applications will reopen in January 2027. Applicants must first secure an unconditional offer from UCL Admissions for an eligible full-time IOE master’s programme.

  • An annual stipend of £21,286, paid monthly after arrival in London and opening a UK bank account.

  • The award supports only the recipient and cannot be held with another UCL scholarship.
