Indonesia - English Teaching Assistant Award — Fellowship

The AMINEF-managed award sends 20 U.S. participants to assist local English teachers at secondary and vocational schools across Indonesia. Placements are usually rural or peri-urban, with 20–25 classroom hours and up to 10 extracurricular hours each week.

The grant runs from August 2027 through May 2028. Participants teach alongside local counterparts, act as cultural ambassadors, and complete at least two community engagement projects.

Benefits & funding

An estimated US$700 monthly stipend supports meals, local transport, utilities and other living costs.
A US$100 monthly teaching allowance and US$100 monthly internet allowance are each available for up to eight months.
Benefits include international travel, accident and sickness coverage, a 24-hour mental-health support line, housing placement and an English-teaching preparation course.
One-time support includes US$200 for pre-departure inoculations, US$500 for relocation, US$500 for repatriation and a US$2,500 housing deposit.
Funding is also available for an Indonesian-language tutor and community engagement projects; participants attend mid-year and end-of-year enrichment conferences.
Financial support for dependents is not available.

Eligibility

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals at the application deadline; permanent residents are not eligible.
Applicants must produce a bachelor’s or master’s diploma by June 2027, and anyone holding a doctoral degree by the national deadline is ineligible.
Candidates must be native English speakers, have relevant teaching experience and be ready to work with Indonesian high-school students.
Dual citizens of Indonesia and the United States are not eligible.
Living in Indonesia for one month or more during the year before the grant is not permitted.
Indonesian proficiency is recommended at novice level, not required; selected participants without qualifying TESOL or TEFL credentials must complete AMINEF’s paid 120-hour online course.
Participants cannot be accompanied by dependents. Finalists must make the required medical disclosures, and the award remains contingent on securing an approved placement.
