The Humanity in Action Fellowship is the flagship program of Humanity in Action, a non-partisan organization with offices in New York, Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Sarajevo and Warsaw. Fellows spend an intensive in-person stretch in a European city studying human rights, democracy, remembrance culture and civic engagement through lectures, workshops and site visits.

Each fellow then runs an Action Project in their own community, and those who finish join a Senior Fellow Network of more than 3,000 people.

The 2026 cycle ran in Copenhagen (24 fellows) and Warsaw (16 fellows). The 2025 cycle, the last one with a separate US call, ran in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen and Sarajevo. Applications for 2027 have not opened yet.

Benefits & funding

  • No program fee: participation is free.
  • Housing is arranged for fellows coming from abroad (group housing, shared hostel rooms or host families); Denmark-based fellows in Copenhagen find their own.
  • Copenhagen: lunch, tea, coffee and snacks on program days.
  • Warsaw: accommodation with breakfast, lunches during the program and local transport.
  • Fellows pay their own travel to the program; Humanity in Action grants some travel stipends and extra stipends based on financial need.
  • Warsaw fellows also cover their insurance and one daily meal.
  • Humanity in Action suggests bringing about €500 (DKK 3,500 in Denmark) for meals and activities outside the program.
  • Mentoring and Action Project Labs follow the program (September 2026 – March 2027 for the 2026 cohorts).
  • Graduates join the Senior Fellow Network, with conferences, professional fellowships, leadership training and grant competitions.

Eligibility

  • Copenhagen 2026 (Europe route): applicants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, Sweden, Norway, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
  • Europe route: citizenship, long-term or permanent residency, or at least two years of continuous residence in an eligible country counts; short-term exchange students do not qualify. Ukrainian citizens apply through the Denmark office.
  • Europe route: currently enrolled undergraduate, graduate and PhD students, and people who graduated in the last two years; non-students should check with their country office first.
  • Warsaw 2026: applicants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and the United States. Students, activists, educators and professionals are welcome, and there is no age limit.
  • US route (last run for 2025): sophomores, juniors and seniors at US colleges; second-year community college students who plan to keep studying; master’s and PhD students at US universities; and people who graduated in the past two years, regardless of citizenship.
  • US route: US citizens at universities abroad may also apply through the US office. First-year undergraduates cannot apply, and there is no GPA minimum.
  • All routes: fluent English (every program runs in English), and fellows must attend every program day.

Application process

    Pick your route: the Europe route (country offices, online form) or the US route (apply.humanityinaction.org).

    Copenhagen materials: a personal statement of up to 500 words, a 90-second video pitching an Action Project idea, a CV without a photo, and one reference’s contact details.

    Warsaw materials: a CV of up to two pages, a 500-word essay on one of three set topics, a 90-second Action Project video with a 100-word description, and a 250-word plan for sharing the experience.

    US route materials: a personal statement, short answers, an Action Project pitch video, a CV, unofficial transcripts, one recommendation letter and a second reference’s contact details.

    Submit online before the deadline; mailed applications are not accepted.

    Staff and Senior Fellows screen the pool and choose finalists.

    Finalists interview on Zoom in a group with two or three other finalists; final decisions weigh the application, references and interview.

    Selected fellows finish a reading list and join a cohort call in the month before the program.
