The High School Journalism Institute is a collaboration between Oregon State University, The Oregonian/OregonLive and other Oregon media outlets, and has run for nearly three decades. It is held each summer on the OSU campus in Corvallis.
Students live in campus residence halls and, guided by professional journalists, report and photograph a 36-page newspaper and produce blog posts and multimedia pieces for OregonLive.com.
Benefits & funding
- Free to attend, including residence-hall housing, thanks to philanthropic and community support.
- Eight days of mentoring from working journalists, using Orange Media Network’s facilities.
- Completing the institute earns a college credit (institute’s About page); OSU’s pre-college listing says no credit.
Eligibility
- Only students who live in Oregon or southwest Washington.
- High school students; OSU’s pre-college listing gives grades 9–12.
- No nationality rule is published.
