Hardiman Research Scholarships support full-time Structured PhD study across University of Galway programs. The 2026 awards were for students starting on 1 September 2026 in Galway, Ireland.

University of Galway runs the scheme for high-achieving researchers across its disciplines. The 2026 round is closed, and the application system normally reopens in early December for the following September intake.

Benefits & funding

  • A €25,000 annual stipend for four years.
  • Tuition fees covered for the four-year award period.
  • The scholarship does not cover the student levy, research consumables, or travel.

Eligibility

  • Applicants are expected to hold a first- or upper-second-class honours primary degree, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Applicants must be new PhD entrants; current PhD students and people who already hold a PhD are not eligible.
  • Awards support full-time Structured PhDs at University of Galway and remain conditional on separate admission to the relevant PhD program.
  • Applicants must meet the university’s applicable English-language requirements.
  • The published scholarship eligibility criteria state no nationality or residency restriction.
  • PhD candidates at Burren College of Art are not eligible for this university scholarship.

Application process

    Identify and contact a potential University of Galway supervisor, then nominate one supervisor in the scholarship application.
  2. 2
    Read the applicant guidance and submit the Hardiman application in English or Irish; the Personal Research Statement has a 1,000-word maximum.

    Ensure the proposed supervisor submits the supervisor form and two referees each submit an academic reference form directly to the scholarship office.

    Complete the separate Structured PhD admission process; any award is conditional on meeting the relevant program entry requirements.
