The Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship is a competitive tuition-fee award for international candidates commencing or enrolled in an eligible higher degree by research at Griffith University. Recipients undertake research on campus in Australia in a research master’s, MPhil or doctoral program.

The award removes tuition-fee liability and adds standard overseas health cover and the Student Services and Amenities Fee, but it does not itself provide a living stipend. Selection considers academic merit, research potential, the proposed training environment and university priorities.

Benefits & funding

  • Tuition fees are covered for up to two years for a research master’s or MPhil and for three years for a doctorate; an eligible doctoral award may receive an extension of up to six months.
  • Standard Overseas Student Health Cover is provided for the candidate, including up to 57 months for a PhD candidate.
  • The Student Services and Amenities Fee is covered during the award.
  • GUIPRS is a tuition award rather than a living stipend; separate stipend scholarships or qualifying external sponsorship may support living costs.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be commencing or enrolled in an eligible Griffith higher degree by research.
  • Applicants must be international under Griffith’s definition. Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, holders of an Australian Permanent Humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens are classified as domestic and are not eligible for GUIPRS.
  • Awardees must maintain on-campus enrolment and normally a full-time study load unless part-time study and the scholarship are approved.
  • Scholarship applicants must provide evidence that they meet the English-language requirement for their chosen research degree when applying.
  • An applicant may enter scholarship ranking no more than twice within five years.
  • The open-merit international round closes on 25 August 2026. Applicants with a sponsorship or scholarship providing at least AUD 36,000 per year for living expenses may lodge a packaged GUIPRS application at any time with evidence of that support.
  • The later round opening on 2 November 2026 is limited to qualifying Griffith Pathway applicants with a recent Griffith Honours, master’s or graduate diploma containing at least 40 credit points of research.
