Fulbright Denmark awards annual grants to Danish citizens undertaking Master’s- or PhD-level study or research at a U.S. university or research institute. The program is administered by the binational Fulbright Denmark commission.
Recipients spend either 4–6 or 8–10 months at a U.S. host institution; funding for a full degree covers its first year only. Alongside academic work, grantees are expected to engage with the host community and contribute to cultural exchange.
Benefits & funding
- DKK 50,000 for a stay of 4–6 months.
- DKK 100,000 for a stay of 8–10 months; a full-degree student receives this support for the degree’s first year.
- Fulbright sponsors and supports the required J-1 visa process for selected grantees.
- The grant is not expected to cover every cost, so applicants should budget for additional funding.
Eligibility
- Applicants must hold Danish citizenship; dual Danish–U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are not eligible.
- The proposed activity must be Master’s- or PhD-level study or research, and a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent must be completed before the grant begins.
- Undergraduate study, internships, summer schools, conferences, LL.M. programs, and MBA programs are ineligible.
- The U.S. stay must begin in August 2027 or later, and applicants cannot have started the proposed U.S. studies before applying.
- Applicants must have applied to a U.S. university and provide proof; Master’s-level applicants must use the institution’s general graduate admission route.
- Core grants cover 4–6 months for one semester or 8–10 months for two semesters.

Application process
- 1Confirm that the proposed program, timing, citizenship status, and stay length meet the core grant rules.
- 2Apply to the U.S. host institution and retain an acceptance letter, invitation, or correspondence confirming the application.
- 3Create an account in the IIE application portal and upload the commitments form, budget, two one-page essays, a two-page CV, transcripts, two recommendations, host documentation, and passport ID page; PhD students and artists or musicians have additional documents.
- 4Submit the online application by February 17, 2027 at 12:00 noon CET.
- 5If invited, attend a short online interview in week 14; final decisions are expected in mid-April.
