Grant for Students with Special Needs — Bachelor's Scholarship

The Grant for Students with Special Needs is an add-on to mobility funding at the University of Zurich. It covers the extra costs a student runs into abroad because of a disability, a physical or mental impairment, or a chronic illness.

Global Student Experience (GSE), the UZH unit behind outgoing mobility, files the request on the student’s behalf. The money comes from Movetia, the Swiss national agency for exchange and mobility that runs the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP).

The grant attaches to a SEMP stay: an exchange semester, a Blended Intensive Programme, a traineeship, or a research stay abroad. A student cannot apply to Movetia directly; only an institution accredited by Movetia can file.

Benefits & funding

Reimburses the actual additional costs caused by the special need, up to a maximum of CHF 12,000 per person.
Counts only the amount above what a participant without special needs would spend on the same stay.
Movetia’s published examples include extra transport costs for wheelchair users, travel and accommodation for an accompanying person or group leader, and sign-language interpreting.
Paid on top of the regular SEMP mobility grant for the stay.

Eligibility

Open to UZH students, PhD students included, going abroad within SEMP.
The applicant has a disability, or a physical, mental or chronic illness, that creates costs other participants do not carry.
The underlying stay has to qualify for SEMP: Movetia funds study periods of 60 days to 12 months, plus Blended Intensive Programmes, traineeships and research stays.
No nationality or residency condition is stated; UZH enrollment and the SEMP conditions decide it.
The request has to come from an institution accredited by Movetia, which at UZH means GSE.

Application process

Confirm the exchange semester, short program, traineeship or research stay is funded under SEMP.

Write to GSE at outgoing@int.uzh.ch at least four months before the stay begins.

Prepare what Movetia asks for: details of the person with special needs, a short description of the needs, and a list of the expected additional costs.

GSE submits the request to Movetia; the details reach Movetia no later than the project period’s final report.
