The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts makes annual project grants to individuals working on architecture and the designed environment. The program supports both early research and the production or public presentation of developed work.
Applicants may be based internationally, although the Foundation states that its grantmaking focuses on the United States. All final products must be disseminated in English.
Benefits & funding
- Production and Presentation grants cover project production and public presentation costs, do not exceed US$20,000, and usually range from US$5,000 to US$15,000. Projects must be completed within two years.
- Research and Development grants cover expenses such as travel, documentation, materials, and supplies, do not exceed US$10,000, and must be completed within one year.
- The Foundation notes that awards may be below the requested amount.
Eligibility
- Individuals and individual collaborators may apply; a collaborator must be a project coauthor rather than a contracted service provider.
- Applicants may be based in the United States or internationally, with no stated nationality or residency restriction. Final products must be disseminated in English.
- Each individual may submit only one Inquiry Form per year. Previous grantees must have completed all earlier grant requirements before applying again.
- Production and Presentation applicants must already have an agreement with a committed producer or presenter, such as a museum or publisher.
- The program does not fund endowments, general operating or indirect expenses, capital projects, scholarship aid or degree work, projects solely for K–12 audiences, debt, or expenses incurred before the grant period.

- 3If invited after first-stage review, submit a Proposal Form and supplementary materials. An invitation does not guarantee funding.
- 4The Foundation presents funding recommendations to its Board of Trustees; awardees then sign a grant agreement covering reporting and acknowledgement requirements.
