Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global, online program run by Google Open Source that brings new contributors into open-source software development. Accepted contributors spend roughly 12 weeks working on a defined programming project for one of 1,000+ participating open-source organizations, guided by an experienced mentor. It is open to anyone 18 or older who is new to open source — students and non-students alike — and requires no travel. Since 2005 the program has introduced more than 21,000 new contributors to open source.

Benefits & funding

  • A stipend paid on passing evaluations, sized to the project and adjusted by purchasing-power parity (PPP) to the contributor’s country of residence:
  • Small project (~90 hours): base 1,500 USD; PPP range 750–1,650 USD
  • Medium project (~175 hours): base 3,000 USD; PPP range 1,500–3,300 USD
  • Large project (~350 hours): base 6,000 USD; PPP range 3,000–6,600 USD
  • Paid in two instalments: 45% after the midterm evaluation, 55% after the final evaluation.
  • Mentorship from an experienced contributor at the host organization throughout the project.
  • Real open-source experience, a completed project, and entry into a global open-source community.

Eligibility

  • At least 18 years old at the time of registration.
  • New to open source: a student or an open-source beginner (no university enrolment required).
  • Eligible to work in your country of residence for the duration of the program.
  • Not residing in a country under United States embargo (currently including Russia, Belarus, and the DNR/LNR regions).
  • Accepted into GSoC no more than once before.
  • Open to all nationalities; the only geographic bar is the US-embargo residency rule above.
