The Pulitzer Center’s Global Reporting Grants support in-depth journalism on critical, underreported issues. The catch-all grant has no restriction on topic or reporting location and accepts staff and freelance journalists worldwide.
Recipients pursue reporting for one or more news outlets across print, photography, audio, video, or mixed formats. The Center matches applications to the most suitable reporting-grant initiative during editorial review.
Benefits & funding
- Grants cover reasonable hard costs of reporting, such as travel, essential data, temporary specialist support, local partners, translation, and production-related expenses.
- Most awards involving international travel are USD 5,000–10,000, although awards may be higher or lower according to the project and budget.
- Half of an approved grant is paid after initial paperwork is completed; the balance is paid when the principal material is submitted for publication or broadcast.
- Staff salaries, basic equipment purchases, overhead, advocacy campaigns, academic-only data projects, books, and feature-length films are not funded. Reporter stipends are considered only in exceptional cases.
Eligibility
- Staff journalists, freelance journalists, reporters, photographers, audio journalists, video journalists, documentary filmmakers, editors, and reporting teams may apply.
- Journalists from all countries and territories are eligible; no residency, degree, age, gender, or minimum-experience requirement is stated.
- Applicants need a specific reporting project and a credible plan for publication or broadcast. Outlet commitment is required before a proposal can be approved.
- A freelancer proposing work in a conflict zone or hostile environment must have a firm assignment from a news organization that accepts responsibility for the freelancer’s safety and well-being.

Application process
- 1Open the shared Pulitzer Center grant form and select English, Bahasa Indonesia, French, Spanish, or Portuguese.
- 2Prepare a project description of no more than 250 words, a publication and distribution plan, letters of interest or commitment, and a detailed preliminary budget.
- 3Add three published work samples, three professional references, and a curriculum vitae, then submit the application online.
- 4Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and an editor normally responds within two to three weeks.
