The Fulbright Master’s Degree Scholarship funds Indonesians to complete a full master’s degree at a U.S. university over one to two years. It is run by AMINEF in Jakarta as part of the Fulbright Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
Applicants do not apply to universities first: after selection, the Institute of International Education (IIE) places finalists, weighing up to five preferred universities. Most fields are open; clinical medicine is excluded.
Benefits & funding
- Up to US$52,000 a year, for up to two years, covering tuition, a monthly living stipend and health cover.
- Paid separately: return flights, J-1/J-2 visa fees, settling-in and return allowances, a pre-academic program, and TOEFL iBT, GRE/GMAT and university application fees.
- The cap may not meet every university’s costs; the grantee covers any shortfall.
- No support for dependents; family may join after the first semester at own cost.
- Grantees commit to returning to Indonesia.
Eligibility
- Indonesian citizens living in Indonesia; anyone studying, living or working abroad is ineligible.
- No U.S. citizenship, U.S. permanent residency or application for it.
- A bachelor’s degree (S1) with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher.
- An English score under two years old: at least TOEFL ITP 550, iBT 80, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 125; some fields need more.
- Ineligible: U.S.-government exchange participants in the last three years; current degree students or scholarship holders; AMINEF, U.S. Embassy and State Department staff and their families; anyone arrested, charged or convicted (minor traffic violations aside).
- Preference for those without a past Fulbright grant or recent substantial U.S. experience.
- No age limit, but grantees must be able to work in Indonesia at least five years before retiring.
