Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program

Benefits & funding

• The grant lasts approximately 9–10 months, covering one academic year.
• Host institutions waive tuition and fees for two courses per semester or one course per quarter.
• All grant recipients receive Fulbright enrichment activities and a health benefit plan.
• Living support varies by language and host arrangement and may combine a stipend with housing, meals, or other institutional support; the central program pages do not state one amount for every participant.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be nominated by a U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission; independent applications are not accepted.
• Applicants must apply through a participating country and reside in the nominating country when applying. Country-specific rules may add further requirements.
• Applicants must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree with a good academic record; a master’s degree is desirable at many host institutions.
• Applicants must be early-career English teachers, teachers in training, or early-career educators in a related field. Prior teaching experience is preferred rather than required.
• Applicants must want to teach their native language and culture in the United States and must meet the published English threshold: TOEFL PBT 550, TOEFL iBT 79–80, or IELTS 6.0.
• U.S. citizens and U.S. dual citizens are ineligible. Applicants must also demonstrate adaptability, maturity, dependability, integrity, professionalism, creativity, self-reliance, and teamwork.

Application process

   Check the participating-country list and contact the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in the home country for its eligibility rules and deadline.

   Obtain nomination through that country office; independent applicants cannot proceed.

   Create an IIE application account and select the country and program year.

   Complete the personal, education, professional-experience, language, test-score, FLTA, essay, and country-specific sections; upload any required transcripts, diplomas, and supplemental materials.

   Register the requested references, review the application, and submit it by the home-country deadline. Submitted applications cannot be edited.
