Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health — Fellowship

The Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health jointly run this annual fellowship. Approximately ten fellows are selected to conduct mentored public-health or biomedical research at approved institutions and project sites linked to the Fogarty LAUNCH research-training network.

Applicants choose one placement country from Malaysia, Vietnam, Ghana, Malawi, Uganda, Nepal, Jamaica, or Peru. The 2027–2028 program year begins in July 2027.

Benefits & funding

Fellows receive the same host-country benefits as traditional Fulbright Study/Research grantees.
Core Fulbright U.S. Student benefits include a host-country cost-of-living-based stipend, accident and sickness benefits, a 24-hour support line, and twelve months of federal non-competitive eligibility.
Round-trip travel and orientation are included for grants in Post countries; benefits in Commission countries vary by country. Some country awards may also include research or book allowances, tuition support, enrichment activities, or language study.
The Fogarty International Center may provide an NIH orientation.

Eligibility

The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or national at the national deadline; permanent residents are not eligible. Applicants are ineligible if they have resided outside the United States for five or more of the six years before the national deadline; living abroad for at least nine months in a calendar year counts as one such year.
By July 2027, the applicant must either be an M.D. or other professional-degree student who has completed the third year, or a Ph.D. candidate who has completed master’s-level requirements and the qualifying examination.
General Fulbright rules also require a conferred bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the grant begins and sufficient language ability for the chosen award.
The proposed medical research cannot involve clinical training, patient care, patient contact, or another activity requiring a medical or nursing license.
The applicant must select one eligible country and meet its project, degree, language, and affiliation requirements.

Review the fellowship page and the country summary for one eligible placement country.

Create an account in the Fulbright application system and select Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health as the award name and general category.

Prepare the academic application, including the project abstract, Statement of Grant Purpose, personal materials, transcripts, and three recommendations.

Identify a proposed host affiliate and consult the relevant site principal investigator. An affiliation letter is highly recommended, while country-specific rules determine whether it is mandatory at the deadline.

Enrolled candidates follow their institution’s earlier campus process; at-large candidates submit directly. Every applicant must personally submit the final application by October 6, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
