The Fulbright Doctoral Degree (PhD) Scholarship gives Indonesians three years of support to begin a full PhD at a U.S. university. AMINEF in Jakarta runs it as part of the Fulbright Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
After selection, the Institute of International Education (IIE) places finalists, weighing up to five preferred universities. Most fields are open; clinical medicine is excluded. Preference goes to those who plan to teach or research at an Indonesian university or research institution.
Benefits & funding
- Up to US$50,000 a year (program page; the FAQ states US$43,000) for three years, covering tuition, a monthly stipend and health cover.
- Paid separately: return flights, J-1/J-2 visa fees, settling-in and return allowances, a pre-academic program, and TOEFL iBT, GRE/GMAT and application fees.
- The cap may not meet every university’s costs; year four onward and dissertation research are not funded.
- No support for dependents.
- Grantees commit to returning to Indonesia.
Eligibility
- Indonesian citizens living in Indonesia; not U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents or applicants for U.S. residency.
- A master’s degree (S2) in the field of the proposed PhD, with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher.
- Some teaching, research, professional or publishing experience, and an intention to take up or return to an academic post.
- An English score under two years old: at least TOEFL ITP 575, iBT 90, IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 135.
- Ineligible: U.S.-government exchange participants in the last three years; current degree students or scholarship holders; AMINEF, U.S. Embassy and State Department staff and their families; anyone arrested, charged or convicted (minor traffic violations aside).
- No age limit, but grantees must be able to work at least five years before retiring.

- 1In AMINEF’s online portal, complete the English form with a one-page study objective and personal statement, an academic writing sample, CV, and legalized transcripts and diploma.
