EACH — Excellence in Analytical Chemistry — is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master run by four European universities. The University of Tartu in Estonia coordinates the consortium and runs admission; the partners are Uppsala University in Sweden, Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland, and University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 in France.

Everyone spends year one in Tartu on general analytical chemistry, metrology and quality management. Year two is one of three specialisations: organic and bioorganic analysis in Uppsala, industrial analysis in Lyon, or electroanalysis at Åbo Akademi. Each year carries 60 ECTS, and the master’s thesis together with the EACH Winter School accounts for 30 ECTS.

Graduates receive two degrees, one from Tartu and one from the year-two university. Of the 149 people who have graduated from the first nine intakes, 140 — 94% — moved into a job or a PhD position soon after finishing.

Benefits & funding

  • Erasmus Mundus scholarship: participation costs of 18,000 EUR for the whole programme, covering tuition and full insurance.
  • Erasmus Mundus scholarship: monthly allowance of 1,400 EUR for up to 24 months.
  • Scholarship places are limited, are decided among the highest-ranked applicants of admission period 1 only, and are subject to geographical balance.
  • Tuition-waiver study place: covers the same 18,000 EUR of participation costs but carries no living allowance; open to EU/EEA/Switzerland applicants who meet the requirements without receiving Erasmus Mundus funding.
  • Fee-based study place: 9,000 EUR per year, 18,000 EUR over the two years, payable by 20 September after arrival in Tartu.
  • Double degree: an MSc from the University of Tartu plus an MSc from the year-two university (MSc Chemistry, MSc Physical and Analytical Chemistry, or MSc Technology).

Eligibility

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science or a related field.
  • The transcript must show at least 60 ECTS in chemistry or chemical engineering and 20 ECTS in mathematics and/or physics.
  • An average grade of at least 66% of the maximum available, across all courses.
  • Final-year students may apply if they graduate by the end of July at the latest.
  • English proof: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 90 for tests taken before 21 January 2026 or a total of 4.5 for tests from that date; Cambridge English B2 First 173 or above; or Pearson PTE Academic 62.
  • The English test is waived for applicants who completed secondary education in English, or at least one full-time academic year in English, in the EU/EEA, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
  • No age, gender or work-experience requirement, and applicants of any nationality may apply. The University of Tartu publishes separate restrictions for citizens of the Russian Federation, and non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens need an Estonian long-term visa or residence permit.
  • Anyone who has already held an Erasmus Mundus Master Course scholarship cannot receive one again.
