European Master of Science in Skin Health and Care (EMOTION) — Master's Scholarship

EMOTION is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master funded by the European Commission. Università del Piemonte Orientale in Novara, Italy coordinates it, together with Universidad Miguel Hernández in Elche, Spain and Université de Namur in Belgium. It trains scientists for the skin health and care sector: cosmetics, dermatological drugs and medical devices.

The degree runs two years and 120 ECTS, entirely in English, and ends in a double degree. Semesters one and two are in Novara.

Semester three is a choice between Elche for the non-clinical track and Namur for the clinical track. Semester four is a six-month project in a university or a company, in a different country from semester three.

Teaching follows a product from end to end: skin physiopathology, discovering an active ingredient by synthesis or from nature, formulation, then biological, toxicological, analytical, non-clinical and clinical testing. Three workshops cover transferable skills, and companies in the sector teach and host students.

Benefits & funding

Erasmus+ scholarship of up to €1,400 per month, for a maximum of 24 months.
The scholarship also covers participation costs, health insurance, registration and student services; travel, visa and residence-permit costs come out of the monthly sum.
Non-fee-paying self-funded places: no participation costs at all, but living, housing and travel are the student’s own.
Fee-paying self-funded places: €4,500 per academic year, €9,000 for the two years, health insurance and registration included.
A double degree from two of the three consortium universities, 120 ECTS in total.
A six-month final project in academia or industry, in a third country of the mobility path.
Associate and teaching partners come from the sector, among them Gattefossé, Intercos Group, Dow, Procos, Roelmi HPC and Antalgenics.
The FAQ states that scholarships and non-fee-paying places are available up to the 2027-2028 academic year.

Eligibility

A bachelor degree or higher from a recognised institution, equivalent to 180 ECTS, finalised by the application deadline.
An academic record that covers both biology and chemistry.
English at B2 or above, proven by an internationally recognised certificate no older than two years, IELTS 6.5 upwards, TOEFL or Cambridge accepted.
Citizens or residents of native-English-speaking countries, and graduates of institutions teaching in English, are exempt from the certificate.
A valid passport or identity document.
No minimum grade is set, though the grade average is scored; no age limit and no work experience requirement.
Open to all nationalities, with no residency requirement; applicants from outside the EU apply for an Italian type D visa after admission.

Application process

Apply in the right round: 1 November to 31 January for scholarships and non-fee-paying places, 1 to 31 May for fee-paying places only.

Assemble the file: declaration form, an English CV signed and dated, the degree diploma, academic transcripts, the English certificate and a copy of your identity document.

Have the diploma and transcripts translated by a certified translator if they are not in English.

Write the personal statement, at most 750 words, in English.

Ask a professor or an employer for a reference letter dated within the last twelve months.

Submit everything online through moduli.uniupo.it by 23.59 CET on the closing day.

Shortlisted candidates sit a videoconference interview: a 7-minute presentation of a research paper sent to you in advance, 10 minutes on your motivation, then 5 minutes of discussion.

Results are published on 30 April for the first round and 30 June for the second; an appeal must be filed within seven days.
