Erasmus Mundus Multiphase Master

Master's ScholarshipFrance · Saint-Étienne

MULTIPHASE Consortium (Mines Saint-Étienne, Politecnico di Torino, Technische Universität München)

Application Deadline

January 31, 2027

MULTIPHASE is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master built around multiphase systems — particles, drops and bubbles — and their use in energy, environment, chemical processing, health and additive manufacturing. Mines Saint-Étienne in France coordinates it, with Politecnico di Torino in Italy and Technische Universität München in Germany as the other two full partners. The European Union co-funds the programme.

The cohort moves country every semester: semester one in Saint-Étienne, semester two in Turin, semester three in Munich, then a five-month thesis internship in industry or academia. Graduates leave with three national degrees, one from each partner university.

Around the taught courses sit an 18-month challenge set and supervised by an industrial partner, two winter schools and two application seminars per semester. Seventeen companies and twelve universities are associated partners. English is the only language the entry rules ask for.

Benefits & funding

  • EMJM scholarship: participation fees waived, €1,400 a month, and free health and accident insurance — about 22 awards per edition.
  • Consortium scholarship: participation fees cut to €2,000 for the two years — about 10 awards per edition, for strong applicants who miss EMJM funding.
  • Self-funded participation fee: €9,000 for the two years, covering registration, teaching, university facilities, assessment and insurance; travel, housing, books and visa costs are not included.
  • Applying is free.
  • Across the programme’s four editions the EU funds 30 places for programme-country students, 30 for partner countries, 27 for NDICI countries and 3 for IPA III countries.
  • Three diplomas on graduation: Diplôme National de Master in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (Mines Saint-Étienne), Laurea Magistrale in Chemical and Sustainable Processes Engineering (Politecnico di Torino), MSc in Materials Science and Engineering (TUM).
  • Self-funded and Consortium students may seek local support: student jobs of roughly €250–300 a month in France and Italy; an Italian regional grant; Erasmus+ or Rhône Alpes Region support of about €2,500 for the France-to-Italy move; student jobs and TUM scholarships in Germany; and possible thesis or internship support in semester four.
  • Estimated monthly living costs are €690–1,000 in Saint-Étienne, €825–1,305 in Turin and €1,368–2,038 in Munich; coach travel between the cities can cost about €30–50.

Eligibility

  • A Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent of at least 180 ECTS in chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics or engineering sciences.
  • A Bachelor of Technology is eligible only when accompanied by a Master of Science or Engineer degree; both degrees are then evaluated equally.
  • The last diploma must be no more than three years old when applications close.
  • Cumulative grade point average at or above 75% of the grading scale maximum.
  • Strong B2 English on the CEFR scale, proven by IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 88 or PTE-A 65; a higher education degree taught in English, held by a native speaker from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA, is accepted instead.
  • Coursework is checked against a Scientific Background form covering mathematics, fluid and solid mechanics, chemistry and thermodynamics, programming and other subjects.
  • Open to all nationalities, with no residency requirement.
  • The EMJM scholarship additionally requires a first higher education degree at enrolment, no EMJM scholarship already received in 2021–2027, and no other EU-funded scholarship for the same master.
  • No more than 10% of the scholarships may go to one nationality; the programme lists Pakistani, Iranian and Colombian applicants as having reached that cap, leaving them the Consortium scholarship route.
