Human Response is the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master on Coordinated Humanitarian Response, Health and Displacement, coordinated by Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon. Seven universities run it, three in Europe and four in Africa, backed by 23 associated partners across Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Greece, Lebanon, Mozambique, Nepal, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sierra Leone and Uganda.

The degree is 120 ECTS over four semesters plus a mandatory two-week summer school, taught in English and awarded as a joint diploma at EQF level 7, co-signed by every partner university attended. Students study at Iscte in Lisbon, then NTNU in Trondheim, then Makerere in Kampala, and spend the fourth semester on dissertation research with a partner institution.

The consortium built the programme to teach humanitarian action in the regions most affected by crises, with a stated focus on the Global South and Africa. It is funded by the European Union through EACEA and advertises 100 vacancies across its four editions.

Benefits & funding

  • 15 Erasmus Mundus scholarships per edition, paid at €1,400 a month.
  • Scholarship holders pay no tuition and are covered by 24 months of insurance.
  • Self-funded places cost €16,000 for the two years, also with 24 months of insurance; the consortium notes that Erasmus+ rules allow some places to be exempted from the fee.
  • No application fee.
  • A joint diploma signed by each partner university the student attended, recognised at EQF level 7.
  • A mandatory two-week summer school in a humanitarian crisis setting, plus an internship placement in the third semester at Makerere.
  • Not covered: travel between the countries of the mobility, housing, living costs, visas and residence permits.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants of any nationality; the programme states no residency requirement.
  • A bachelor degree of 180 ECTS is required — only candidates holding one can be admitted.
  • NTNU lists relevant backgrounds as health sciences, public policy, engineering, social work and international relations.
  • Proof of English is mandatory: TOEFL 92 overall, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 5.5, PTE Academic 76, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 180 or above, or Duolingo 135 with at least 100 per component.
  • Exempt from the test: applicants whose country of secondary education has English as an official language, holders of an IB or IGCSE qualification, and anyone whose bachelor was taught entirely in English with documentary proof.
  • The English certificate must still be valid, counted as within 2 years and 5 months of the application.
  • No age limit and no minimum work experience; professional experience is scored in selection, not required.

Application process

    Apply online through the route published on the programme’s Applications page; there are two rounds per edition.

    The scholarship round closes in January — for the 2026/2028 edition on 9 January 2026 at 17:00 CET (19:00 EAT).

    The self-funded round for that edition opened on 16 January 2026 and closed on 31 March 2026.

    Upload every mandatory document: valid passport, photograph, diplomas, transcripts with courses and grades or a diploma supplement, the English certificate with its validation code, a CV, a statement of purpose in PDF, and two signed and dated recommendation letters.

    Scholarship results are sent by email; self-funded results are expected at the end of May.
