SpaceMed is a two-year, full-time European master on what space flight and other extreme environments do to the human body. Three institutions run it together: Université de Caen Normandie in France, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany, and the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Study is 120 ECTS over four semesters and everyone moves: semester one in France, semester two in Germany, semester three in Slovenia, then a thesis semester. The thesis can be done at one of the three universities, at an associated partner, or at an outside institution.

Teaching is built around laboratory and field work — parabolic flights, Antarctic habitats, bed rest studies, and research at altitude, underwater and in heat and cold. Graduates finish with three separate master degrees, one from each university, plus a SpaceMed Diploma Supplement.

Benefits & funding

  • Erasmus Mundus scholarship: €1,400 per month for a total of 24 months, plus a participation fee waiver.
  • Around 20 Erasmus Mundus scholarships are awarded every year.
  • Scholarship holders pay no participation fee; the Erasmus+ programme covers it directly.
  • Participation fee for the 2026-2028 intake without a scholarship: €5,000 for year one and €5,000 for year two.
  • The fee covers registration at the partner universities, teaching activities, student services, administrative support, and health, liability, accident and assistance insurance.
  • SpaceMed allocates no extra money for travel, accommodation or visa costs, and the fee does not cover visas, travel, course materials or living costs.
  • Three master degrees, one awarded by each partner university, recognised by all three, plus a diploma supplement covering the taught semesters and the thesis.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor degree in life sciences, psychology or kinesiology (180 ECTS), a master degree in engineering, a medical degree, or a degree with significant study of humans in space or extreme environments.
  • Final-year students may apply if they graduate by the end of their academic year, June to August, in time to enrol in October.
  • English at CEFR B2: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 580 paper, 237 computer or 87 internet-based, or a Cambridge English B2 First certificate.
  • Native English speakers may submit a declaration of honour instead of a test; certificates must be less than three years old.
  • Open to students from all over the world, with no residency requirement.
  • For the scholarship only: no more than two nationals of the same country can be awarded an EMJM scholarship in one selection.
  • Anyone who has already held an EMJM or Erasmus Mundus master or joint doctorate scholarship cannot receive a second one, and holders must waive any other EMJM scholarship.

    Fill in every form in English and upload the required documents.

    Attach the CV, preferably in Europass format, the original degree certificates and official transcripts.

    Attach proof of English, two recommendation letters — one from a faculty official and one from an employer or supervisor — a valid passport or national identity card, and a proof of residency issued within the last 12 months showing full name, address and date.

    Record and upload the motivational video: under one minute, MP4, in English, explaining why you would be a good candidate.
