EMAI – Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Artificial Intelligence

EMAI is a 120-ECTS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Artificial Intelligence coordinated by Pompeu Fabra University with Sapienza University of Rome, Radboud University and the University of Ljubljana. Students begin in Barcelona, study in three countries during the first year and choose a consortium university for their second-year specialisation and thesis.

The programme combines machine learning and symbolic AI with tracks in intelligent decision-making, robotics, cybersecurity and data science. The 2026–2028 Erasmus Mundus Scholarship round is closed, and the next scholarship dates have not been published.

Benefits & funding

The 2026–2028 cohort offered approximately 19 full Erasmus Mundus Scholarships.
Each scholarship provides a non-taxable stipend of €1,400 per month for 24 months.
It covers tuition and other participation costs, travel, installation, subsistence, visa fees, and full insurance.
The scholarship is full-time and cannot be extended beyond the programme’s 24 months.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold, or complete before EMAI begins, a first-cycle degree of at least 180 ECTS that permits postgraduate study.
Applicants need at least 12 ECTS in mathematics, 12 ECTS in programming, and 12 ECTS in computer science or computer engineering topics. Candidates from other fields may be assigned 10–60 ECTS of essential prior-study requirements by the academic committee.
Scholarships may be awarded to candidates worldwide; no more than 10% of the scholarships across the first four EMAI editions may go to one nationality.
A person who previously received an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master, Erasmus Mundus Master Course or Joint Doctorate scholarship cannot receive another EMAI Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
English evidence must meet the published TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or Cambridge thresholds unless the applicant’s qualifying degree meets a listed country or consortium-state exemption.
Professional experience is optional, not an admission requirement.

Confirm the degree, prerequisite-credit and English-language requirements on the EMAI admission page.

Prepare identity documents, degree or completion statement, full transcript, an English CV of no more than two pages, a 600–800-word motivation letter, a one-minute introduction video, two recommendation requests, the current EMAI supplementary questionnaire and accepted English evidence.

Register through the UPF online pre-enrolment system and select EMAI during the scholarship application period.

Submit the complete application; recommendation letters are uploaded confidentially by referees through links sent by the platform.

Shortlisted candidates attend a 10–15-minute online interview, after which the committee makes final selections and maintains a waiting list.
