EESIC is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master that trains engineers for environmental sustainability and international cooperation work. The Università di Trento coordinates it, with Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon and the Universitat Politècnica de València as the other degree-awarding partners.
The degree runs four semesters and 120 ECTS. Semester 1 is in Lisbon, semester 2 in Valencia, semester 3 in Trento; each carries 30 ECTS of mandatory and elective courses in areas such as hydrological modelling, water resource management, waste management and nature-based solutions.
The fourth semester is 6 ECTS of project work plus a 24 ECTS dissertation, done with one of the 48 associated partners — universities, companies, and governmental and non-governmental organisations across several continents. Graduates hold three national master’s degrees at once.
Benefits & funding
- Erasmus Mundus scholarship: €1,400 per month for the whole degree, up to 24 months, covering subsistence, travel and installation; holders pay no tuition and no other mandatory participation costs.
- In the 2026–2028 edition the published ranking gave the scholarship to positions 1–20, a fee reduction to positions 21–35, and full-fee admission to positions 36–40; positions 41–108 formed the reserve list.
- Tuition without a scholarship is €8,000 per year; the fee reduction cuts it by 75%, to €2,000 per year.
- The consortium adds an allowance of up to €470 per month for up to 9 months for students admitted without an Erasmus Mundus scholarship (2026–2028 edition).
- Three degrees on completion: Mestrado em Engenharia do Ambiente (Instituto Superior Técnico), MSc in Engineering for Environmental Sustainability and International Cooperation (UPV) and Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria per l’Ambiente e il Territorio (Università di Trento), plus a Joint Diploma Supplement and the EESIC joint certificate.
- No application fee.
Eligibility
- A first-cycle degree in civil and/or environmental engineering of at least 180 ECTS, or an equivalent bachelor’s degree carrying the stated credits in mathematics, physics, chemistry, civil-environmental engineering and structural engineering.
- Closely related backgrounds such as chemical or industrial engineering are assessed case by case for compatibility.
- Final-year bachelor students may apply; non-EU applicants must hold the degree by 30 June before the programme starts.
- English at B2 of the Common European Framework or above, shown by certificate (IELTS 5.5 or above in every module, Cambridge FCE, TOEFL iBT and equivalents) or by an official university declaration that the whole degree was taught in English.

- Open to applicants of any nationality. Across the programme’s four editions, no more than 10% of all students may come from any one country.
- Applicants who already hold a master’s degree are eligible provided they have never received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
- No age limit, no work-experience requirement, no residency requirement.

Application process
- 1Wait for the call to open on the Admission page — the 2027–2029 call is published in October 2026.
- 2Prepare the mandatory documents: passport or ID copy, CV in Europass format, bachelor’s degree and transcript with official translation if not in English, English language certificate, and a motivation statement.
- 3Optionally add professional certifications and a personal video of at most 2 minutes, uploaded to YouTube in unlisted mode and added as a link.
- 4Name two to three referees, academic or current and former employers, with their email addresses; each is emailed automatically within 24 hours of being entered.
- 5Submit through the online application portal only — applications sent by email are not accepted, and there is no application fee.
- 6The consortium scores each file on academic merit, motivation, recommendation letters, previous experience and skills; only candidates reaching 65/100 continue, and the best 60 are interviewed online for additional ranking points.
- 7The final ranking is published with its scholarship, fee-reduction, full-fee and reserve bands; the 2026–2028 ranking came out on 13 April 2026.
- 8Admitted non-EU students then apply for a Portuguese study visa, since the first semester is in Lisbon.
