The China Medical Board’s Global Health Leadership Development Program trains early-career Chinese health professionals in global health research and practice. Yale School of Medicine and LSHTM run the overseas side; Peking University Health Science Center runs the China side.
Each fellow has a one-week orientation in Beijing, 1–3 months of training at Yale or LSHTM, then at least nine months of mentored fieldwork at a partner site in Africa, Asia or Latin America. Each institution selects four fellows a year.
Benefits & funding
- Living stipend of US$37,656 for the year, covering the US and the field site (Yale track).
- Project stipend of US$15,000 and a training budget of US$8,000.
- Flights, visa fees and health insurance paid by the program.
- A Yale post-doctoral or post-graduate appointment for the year; certificates from CMB and Yale (not a degree).
Eligibility
- Chinese nationality required; early-career health professionals.
- Typical backgrounds: young faculty, CDC and research-institute staff, government global health staff and clinicians in China, and biopharma professionals.
- Chinese students at universities outside China in the final year of a public health, global health or related degree.
- English proficiency required, assessed in both interview rounds.
- LSHTM route: a completed MD, PhD or DPH in a health or public health field; anyone who has been a grant’s principal investigator or has line-managed a post is not eligible.
- A partner-hospital notice for the 2025 round (West China Hospital) set an under-45 limit for staff of CMB-funded Chinese universities, plus an internal department sign-off.

Application process

- 2Email one PDF (English statement of up to 1,000 words, Chinese and English CV, degree certificate, transcript if in graduate study) to CMB Beijing; two referees email one-page English letters directly.
- 3First-round virtual interview; eight finalists per institution advance.
- 4Finalists agree a site with co-mentors and submit a project proposal, training plan and both mentors’ support letters.
