The Global Health Leadership Development Program is run by the China Medical Board, a US foundation that works on health professional education across East and Southeast Asia. It began in 2021 and prepares early-career Chinese health professionals for careers in global health research and practice. Yale School of Medicine and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine serve as the overseas operating institutions, and Peking University Health Science Center runs the China-based side. A fellow spends one week in pre-departure orientation in Beijing, one to three months of training at Yale or LSHTM, and at least nine months of field work at a host institution in a low- or middle-income country. Host sites sit across Africa, Asia and Latin America, among them Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Kenya, Nigeria, Malaysia, Samoa, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Four fellows are selected each year at Yale and four at LSHTM.
Benefits & funding
- Living stipend of USD 37,656 for the fellowship year, covering living costs in both the United States and the LMIC site (Yale track).
- Project stipend of USD 15,000 for the design, implementation and completion of the fellow’s project.
- Training budget of USD 8,000 per fellow for short courses, workshops, training materials, software and books.
- International flights, visa fees and health insurance are paid by the program, and Yale books all travel directly.
- Health cover runs through Cultural Insurance Services International and includes International SOS global assistance.
- Fellows hold a formal Yale appointment for the year, as post-doctoral fellows or post-graduate associates depending on their degree.
- CMB describes the award as full financial support: living stipend, project and training stipends, international travel, visas and medical insurance.
- Completing fellows receive a certificate from the China Medical Board and one from Yale, and join the program alumni network.
- Fellows with strong output may apply for a renewal grant after the fellowship year.
Eligibility
- Chinese health professionals early in their careers; the program exists to build China’s global health workforce.
- Young faculty in clinical medicine, public health, nursing and related university departments in China.
- Public health practitioners, researchers and program management staff at disease-control agencies and research institutions in China.
- Young professionals in global health or international health collaboration roles inside Chinese government organizations.
- Clinical practitioners at Chinese healthcare institutions with a strong interest in a global health career.
- Chinese students at universities outside China who are in the final year of a public health, global health or related degree.
- Professionals from biopharmaceutical and related companies who need or want global health engagement.
- English proficiency is required, evidenced by test scores, a degree taught in English or work experience abroad.
- Applicants currently enrolled in a graduate program also submit a recent transcript.
- Some Chinese universities and hospitals circulate the call internally with their own nomination steps, so staff at those institutions apply through their international office.

Application process
- 1Complete the online application form, choose Yale or LSHTM, and rank up to three preferred LMIC sites.
- 2Submit the first-round file: personal statement in English of up to 1,000 words, CV in Chinese and English, scanned highest degree certificate, a recent transcript if currently enrolled in a graduate program, and two English recommendation letters of one page each.
- 3Sit the first-round review and interview. Eight candidates per operating institution move to the second round.
- 4Join the online site introduction meeting and contact the site mentors to confirm placement preferences.
- 5Work with the assigned co-mentors on the preliminary project proposal of up to 1,000 words and the training plan of up to 600 words.
- 6Submit the second-round file, including letters of support from both co-mentors, then sit the second-round review and interview.
- 7Attend the one-week pre-departure orientation in Beijing before the fellowship year starts.
